Download of the Month#10 – Max Tannone – DUB KWELI

October 24, 2010

ZonaReGGae Reviews…JAH SOLID ROCK & NOT EASY AT ALL ‘Collie Weed Riddim’

October 12, 2010

Collie Weed Riddim (7”) 2010 Not Easy At All Prods/Jah Solid Rock

The ‘riddim’ release has an undeniable magnitude in reggae music industry. Since the heydays of Jamaican roots music till nowadays that it opens a platform for new artists to rise, provides an every time, welcomed update to oldies and foundation tunes , and one may say that it is even responsible for the ceaseless resistance of the reggae addicts 7inch format!
Still, riddims come and go, every month, year after year, and maybe due to the high demanding crazy business labels, little stick around in the turntables enough time to be really appreciated…

As 2010 approaches it´s end, I´ve little doubt that anyone will bring some better effort that outcomes ZonaReGGae choice for Riddim of the Year, The Collie Weed Riddim!
Release in March, Collie Weed riddim was the first release from much talked about cooperation between famous record label Jah Solid Rock Music and Not Easy At All Productions crew!

Joining forces with the aim of bringing back original roots reggae vibe, just before the partnership was established both attested what they were able, wid the full album releases from: Dutch rising star Benaissa ‘Tables Turn’ (2008,SilverKamel/Jah Solid Rock), and Jamaican, Bunny Wailer protégé, Wild Life debut album ‘Too Tuff’ (2009,Not Easy At All)

For Collie Weed, they added Jamaicans Earl 16, Chezidek and Dutch Lloyd De Meza to the aforementioned, providing a wide range of vocal styles and tones to an amazing early 80T´s revival, bassline driven Roots BIG BIG tune!

From the, well placed horns arrangements, a bit of nice rub-a-dub groove between the drum & bass combination and a, here and there, smooth rocking guitar riffs (letting you waiting more!), everything is perfect in this nowadays roots masterpiece, and the guest voices all do a great work in providing amazing feelings, vibes and conscious lyrics.

Earl 16, as always, bring an amazing sweet flow in Fittest of the Fittest, talking about nowadays lack of leadership to guide us into the righteous ways of Survival in Babylon.

Chezidek brings one of the strongest tunes from his new album ‘Judgment Time’, giving praises to the hayah powers in Walk with Jah; and Wildlife singjays in powerful style about ‘Ganja Yard’, a tune already released in the Too Tuff album.
Benaissa brings, in I opinion, the power play version, wid African Blood, an emotive cryout to the decreasing of African roots & culture maintenance.

Collie Weed riddim is definitely a conscious reality check all over; musically uplifted by a high demanding production level! The best welcome card that Jah Solid and Not Easy Al All could have bring to show the riddim makers they´re ready to be the talk of the town!

Already running things in the Netherlands; they also brought one of the best full album from Chezidek till now, with Judgment time, and already on the works brand new releases coming alongside The Maytones, Earl 16, Junior Marvin or Apple Gabriel!
Wake up the town, there´s a new sound around!

ZonaReGGae Reviews…PABLO MOSES ‘The Rebirth’

October 9, 2010

Pablo Moses The Rebirth 2010 House of Moses/Grounded Music/IWelcom

2010 will be a year to remember in Roots Reggae music taking in consideration the many Jamaican foundation roots veterans, coming back with new recordings! If promised for the coming times there are releases from names like: Earl 16, Apple Gabriel, The Maytones or Tetrack(!), we can already rejoice with new music from Anthony Johnson, Horace Andy,The Congos, Earl Zero, Don Carlos, Winston Jarret, Clinton Fearon or PABLO MOSES!

With more than 30 years of presence in reggae music, Pablo Moses never seemed to be very worried into releasing lots of music and albums, but preferred to bring out original, conscious and mind opening material, every time!

Achieving a kind of cult status wid his first 3 releases Revolutionary Dream (1976), A Song (1980) and Pave The Way (1981), Pablo Moses assured a place for ever in Jamaican Roots reggae history, even if we cannot really place him into the foundation line up of artists…

I myself like to tag him alongside artists like Kiddus I, Burning Spear, Native or Bob Marley, as one of the most accomplished and gifted songwriters of Jamaican reggae music, always shouting for truth and human rights in a activist, controversial and intelligent way.

Despite the many year he was away from the studio recordings(15 since the last Mission!), Pablo Moses keep on spreading his music touring around the world, and more recently he came back to the spotlight wid the 2004 reissue from his Pave The Way release, and last year featuring as guest in Groundation’s latest release ‘ Here I Am’.

As the songwriter he is, also kept on writing new music, waiting for the right time to release it, and that time as arrived with the new ‘The Rebirth’ (April 2010,House of Moses/Grounded Music).

As always, all brand new original tunes, totally roots oriented wid just the right amount of modern clinch, to make dis one of the Roots Reggae releases of the year!
Surrounded by a top all-stars line up of musicians like, Sly & Robbie , Skully & Sticky Thompson, Robert Lyn, Franklin ‘Bubbler’ Waul, Dwight Pinckney and Dean Fraser playing a big role in horns, production and even back vocals, this is surely The Rebirth of a legend, that keeps on going with the same attitude, perseverance and originality as 30 years ago!

Pablo Moses spreads a powerful reality check, all over The Rebirth, in his everlasting alike horns chanting style, teaching about Human Rights and worlds greatest injustices in a true activist way!
From the amazing open track Born to Be Bad, we can see Pablo Moses also stands out strong on his point of views and feelings; and chanting down oppression and violence are his main concerns as shown on tunes like So Much; Guns or More Than You Can Chew.
Pablo Moses also included some lovers style words in Have to Leave or the nyahbingi driven They Can´t Undo.
Devoted points of view also take place in the rockers style Jah Will Make a Way, and Jah is Watching you; as efforts to bring hope and optimism in tunes like the beautiful Got to Make a Way, Can Make a Living, Don’t Drop Out or the ska grooved We have The Capability.

Favourite tune is hard to choose, but the feeling for Africa as his Mother Land in Mama Yeah, as to stand out, for the genuine sense you get by listening Pablo singing:

“I remember you my mother,
You gave birth to my Culture.
I remember you my mother
How foreigners make you suffer.
You have sustain
so much pain,
Yet you inspire
Never retire
You grive and cry
But never die
You were dishonored
But never conquered”

I believe it´s not easy to bring out an album that, dealing with some many important and often lightly outspoken subjects, also sparks a positive and optimistic vibe, and Pablo Moses still has what it takes to do it again!
As you open the CD cover a statement reads: I AM A RASTAMAN THE OUTLAW!
And he´s back!

Not he´s just back, as his oldschool vibes are just now being reissued, wid the acclaimed Revolutionary Dream & A Song albuns coming back to life, wid renowned Jim Fox engineer, remastering work, and Groundation front man Harrisson Stafford liner notes!

ZonaReGGae Reviews…DUBMATIX – ‘System Shakedown’

October 1, 2010

Dubmatix System Shakedown 2010 Renegade Media

Acclaimed, by BBC Radio Don Letts, as ‘Canada´s Dread at The Controls’ and, after winning 2010 Juno Award for Best Recording of the year (with Gonna Be Alright feat.Prince Blanco), everyone surely wondered about the follow upcoming album to the worldwide praised, Renegade Rocker in 2008…
Jesse King aka Dubmatix, took is time, and in between touring, producing, remixing, he reached out the people wishing to work with, and took a year to craft the tunes for each of them! The line up chosen for System Shakedown was a challenging one, and still with some surprise we are presented with a high demanding production level, from a man who surely enjoys the music he´s playing!

The first high point in System Shakedown is that Dubmatix is really exploring and blasting subs potential in every style he brings, so this one is guaranteed to move those speakers out! Heavy bass lines inna Roots & Culture way and also into some groundbreaking electronic experiments!
It´s true the couple of new electronic dub approaches, by the first half of the album, are unusual, but presents once more Dubmatix´s diversity, variety and creativity in both playing and producing tracks.

Opening wid a Groovy hip hop & dubstep styled beat for Kulcha Ites flowing in rhymes, and teaching how to do the Wooble Weeble, he than brings some wicked Breaks wid a Dancehall groove, on Dem no Like it featuring Omar Perry.
More into the experimental side, Ragga Twins guest wid a long riding, over a creative dubstep approach, bringing one of the proper ways to Dubstep the reggae vibe.
In Demand Jamaican born singer Ammoye, features also in fine style Locking Down Babylon. A Dark but wicked Electro Dancehall tune, which will make ya move for sure!

In between, two tunes ease your mind, first wid an amazing flow from UK veteran Brother Culture, mashing up the dancefloor, in the irie and uplifting Rough Likkle Sound. Cultural sound begins to come out, certainly even more in the classic Rockers tradition tune, Celebrate my Love, wid veteran, from Jamaican – Toronto long time connection, Jay Douglas soulful touch giving the first hints about the Roots music in System Shakedown!
Deep Dark Dub, a classic Dubmatix steppers Dub track, turns System Shakedown into part 2…were we are treated wid a second half showdown by Jamaican veterans!

Mighty Diamonds were presented specially, wid a classic one drop roots tune to shine their harmonies, sufferers cry inna Give a Helping Hand…And remember nice 80T´s roots music wid that sweet Rub a Dub bassline? It´s back wid Dubmatix style all over it! In the track System Breakdown, a supposed  Gregory Issacs featuring, recently anounced by Dubmatix as a Jamaican scammer who has been pretending to be him…(Check more on this at  UNITED REGGAE.COM NEWS).

The 1st single chosen for System Shakedown(released at German Irie Ites Records), brings Tippa Irie singjaying in a lovers mood, bringing Happy vibes and memories; and there´s another powerful steppers tune featuring long time veteran Dennis Alcapone, shouting bout the Struggle in his everlasting unique deejay style.

Close to end Dubmatix brings once again a Drum n Bass extravaganza! Drums mixing wid Dub elements and a Heavy Bassline, exploding just in the right time to vibez up the place man, I ear Drum n Bass! All wid veteran U Brown always in top form, deejaying about What ya Gonna Do to stop me now.
There should be no stop on it, when the music is sounding pure niceness all over so many different approaches, but it comes to an end in the best way it could…Finishing wid the second clean track on the album, Dubmatix recalls and pays tribute to the reason for all this music to be, and brings a spiritual Roots Dub tune wid Kingdom Dub, uplifted by beautiful horns section.

One of the most exquisite things about Dubmatix way of creating music is that it´s produced in the way live mixing dj oriented music is! Always giving you the clean track by the end, or a smooth outro to bring the next tune.
Needless to say that since, at least, acclaimed 2008 Renegade Rocker album, Dubmatix should be a must play presence, in every called Reggae / Dub Selector,DJ or soundsystem set, and I´m guessing that after they listen to Kulcha Ites demanding by the end of the open track, Hey Dj drop that needle! Every Dj will be wanting to drop it on dis one!
Dubmatix is reaching the King status, and System Shakedown certifies The Dread at The Controls tag!
